54-miles of scenic, cultural, and historic backroads from Dalton to the top of
Fort Mountain. Explore the historic sites on and near the Byway, take in the

Fort Mountain State Park
This Georgia State Park in the Chattahoochee National Forest offers beautiful trails winding through hardwood forest and blueberry thickets that hikers and mountain bikers will enjoy. During the summer, families lounge around the sandy beach surrounding a clear mountain lake. Camping, cabins, horseback riding, mountain biking, swimming and picnicing.

Fort Mountain Stables
Experience the Fort Mountain State Park on horseback. Nestled in the North Georgia Mountains are many treasures to explore. What better way than on horseback? We offer guided trail rides with several riding packages to suit your level of experience and desired saddle time. Our trails include old talc mine shafts, scenic overlooks and waterfalls. Bear, deer and turkey have been seen on the trails.

Cloundland Canyon State Park
Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon is one of the most scenic parks in the state. This beautiful park is set around a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton gulch Creek, and features two waterfalls. Hiking, camping, cabins and picnic area.

Carter's Lake
One of the most scenic lakes in the Southeast, located at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains where you can camp, picnic, boat, fish, hunt, and mountain bike. Rental cabins and boats are available at the

Wetlands reconstruction project sponsored by Dalton Utilities. From the well-marked trails, visitors can observe native flora and fauna, which are gradually returning the abandoned farmland to its original state.
Ocoee River Whitewater Rafting
The Ocoee River, site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events, is only 40 miles from Dalton. Experience Ocoee River Rafting and feel the excitement of whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River. The Ocoee River has become the most popular whitewater rafting adventure in America with over twenty continuous rapids and many play spots for miles of endless fun and adventure. Located in the Cherokee National Forest, the Ocoee River flows through a beautiful gorge surrounded by scenic wildlife and natural wonders. The Cohutta Fish Hatchery is the site of an intensive freshwater mussel propagation study. Mussels are being raised for release back into the Conasauga as well as being studied. Research is being conducted by the Tennessee Aquarium Research Institute on host fish for mussels, historical data, sediment toxicity, as well as overall freshwater mussel issues. The hatchery has been turned into a state of the art propagation facility as well as being renovated to house researchers and students. The hatchery Features 10 tanks displaying the warm-water species raised by the hatchery.
