Train Viewing

Dalton’s unique geographical position has given it a rich locomotive history that continues to appeal to passer-bys and train fans alike.

We are the only place in Georgia, outside of Atlanta, where the Norfolk Southern and CSX rail lines intersect and run side-by-side. This rare convergence makes Dalton great for train viewing.

The Dalton Freight Depot, located at 305 S. Depot St in Downtown Dalton, is the ideal place to capture images and video of these modern machines. With our state-of-the-art ATSC computer monitor, visitors can see the rail system for miles – allowing them to know ahead of time when the next train is coming. Additionally, the depot has live audio feed from train radios and a live streaming web cam for online watchers.

The CSX line runs north of Dalton towards Tennessee, crossing through Tunnel Hill, GA just 8 miles north. The trains pass through the Chettoogeta Mountain and head away from Tunnel Hill, but off to the side of the rail is the original track that dates back to the 1850s.

The Tunnel Hill Heritage Center continues to preserve the Historic 1848 Western and Atlantic Tunnel, inviting visitors to walk through the tunnel that once served as an important train rail.
